Discipleship
The basis for discipleship can be summed up by this scripture, John 13:34-35:
"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."
Jesus is telling us that people will recognize us as His disciples by our love for one another. The "love factor" can't be overlooked since it's a necessary quality which identifies Christians. Also, a disciple is simply a follower or a student, which means, as believers, the Word of God or the Bible, should be our main instruction book. In fact, the Bible is actually like a manual for living. It's a roadmap clearly marking the way to share our faith with others by showing them the love of God.
Luke 10:41, "Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one.[a] Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her." In this passage Jesus points out to Martha that truly one thing is necessary or priority in life and that one thing is to take time to hear what the Master is saying. Faith, the most critical issue in our lives, works by love, and love is not a magical endowment, but something acquired as we follow Jesus and allow the scripture to live in us.
The days we live in are very busy and many of us find it hard to get apart and take this special time to hear from God. But technology can be a help to us even in this spiritual pursuit! On-line podcasts and videos are available from numerous Christian organizations. Plus, we invite you to join our Continue in the Word Club, and receive 4 CD's monthly for an offering of $20.00
"So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." -- Romans 10:17
